Yelp and Social Media
Yelp's interactive aspects between users was one of the most interesting and beneficial elements of the site. For me, as a user, I often think twice about the reviews, asking questions like "but, do they know my taste?" "Are they like me?" "What if she doesn't like spicy?" etc. The ability to interact on the 'Talk' forum, have a dynamic and personal user account and even message user to user is a great way that people can better make a decision on a service/business. Additionally, like Facebook, where you can connect, develop relationships, and even develop your own personal image, the social media aspects of Yelp mirror those effects. When I asked on Yelp Talk about a certain restaurant that would be suitable for a big group when my family comes in May for graduation, a plethora of people responded. This easily opened the door for me to further interact with each person who showed interest in my question. This aspect of Yelp really showed me how the user is becoming the producer and also how dynamic the online world can be in how it affects person decisions you might make in the physical world.
It appears that Yelp is a site that allows users to form their own community based on similar tastes and interests. I am curious to know if relationships developed on this site last a long time or if relationships on the site develop from one seeking a question about a restaurant or service and then end after the question is answered. Regardless though this site seems very trustworthy and informative!
ReplyDeleteI have actually never used yelp, but it seems like it would be helpful if they added little buttons where you could indicate if there food is spicy (with a hot pepper photo) or has unique ingredients...I think people would be more inclined to be more specific like that if it was a lot easier.
