In
order to contribute my findings and analysis to Wikipedia, I updated the page
titled, “Digital Divide in the United States”. Specifically I added my analysis
to the page labeled, “Age”. The content in this section regarding the digital
divide in the United States was very outdated and limited. In a nutshell, the current information on
the site stated that, “older
generations of Americans have consistently reported the lowest level of access
to the Internet per age cohorts.”
After doing much research on senior activity and in what ways seniors
use the web, I added a paragraph that updated this section by explaining the
trends senior activity is expected to occur by 2015, and the various ways in
which seniors are now using the Internet.
Written below are the two paragraphs I added to Wikipedia:
Although
in the past, studies have consistently shown that the lowest reported age group
of users who have access to the web are those aged 55 and older, this trend is
dissolving as more seniors are joining the Internet. In 2010 the estimated number of seniors (aged 55 and older)
who were on the Internet was reported at 45%. The number of users in 2011 was 47%, and currently in
2012, there is an estimated number of 49%. This number is expected to increase in 2013 to 52%, in 2014
to 54%, and in 2015 to 56%.
Senior
activity on the Internet is expected to increase as more seniors are using the
web for a variety of purposes.
According to a survey of users using Senior Net (an online social
networking site for seniors), 94% of users claimed they used e-mail to stay in
touch with friends and family, 72% used Internet to stay current with news and events, 70% used internet to
seek health related information, and 31%
used Internet to obtain information
about prescription drugs.
